Fall Sports for SP have regretfully been completed

 sphs.jpg

With the loss of the state playoff football game last Friday night, the fall sports programs at South Point have come to a close.

What a great fall season though, eh?

The boys soccer team did well; the football team did great. Boys and girls cross country did well. Girls golf improved. Girls softball has a lot to look forward to in the next couple of years, and the volleyball teams looked good for another season.

Even the cheerleaders fared well ! Powderpuff cheer squad too !

Belmont Middle School still has boys soccer in-season for a couple of more weeks, and the rest of the sports re-tool for the winter sports of swimming, basketball, and wrestling.

HS basketball tonight at the gym - vs. Cherryville – updates later as our intrepid HS reporters text the sports editor.

Catching Up

The last several days have caused the editorial cabal of the Belmont Front Porch to get behind in their filed stories and experiences.

The nice weekend allowed many of us to get caught up with yard work - props to the great students from Belmont Abbey College for neighborhood assistance with leaf raking and bagging. That was a great help, espcially for older citizens.

Speaking of bagging leaves — you can push leaves to the curb and the City of Belmont does still do a leaf cleanup, ususally every couple of weeks generally a couple of days after the trash and recycle pickups. For example, a Monday trash day would mean a Wednesday leaf vacuum on alternating weeks. Tuesdays = Thursday leaf removal, etc.

However, you are encouraged to mulch your leaves and develop a composting pile. The compost really helps the gardens and yards in this area of hard, red, clay soil.

There are several neighbors who actually drive around and pick up bagged leaves to use in their own compost piles or as mulch in their gardens. Again, a great neighborly way to keep the recycling process going in this fine community.

Congratulations to the SPHS football team - they keep winning. The wild, cold night on Friday was fun. 70-31 outcome, another step in the playoff picture. This coming Friday is against TC Roberson, known more for their soccer program than for football, but that is the way the cookies crumble.

Speaking of soccer — Lake Norman High School finished their second undefeated season with a wild final against Wilson Fike in Raleigh this past Saturday, winning 4-2. The team that being our Raiders in the first round lost to Charlotte Catholic 6-0 in the second round. Catholic lost to Lake Norman 3-0 in the Regional final last week.

We have stories coming up about the All-conference selections for soccer. The Abbey’s fall sports, and MS sports reports. We are keeping an eye on the construction projects around town — Like the opening of the new Lowe’s and the hotel.

We were also saddened by the loss of a community leader in Jon Closson last week. Jon is the husband of Keep Belmont Beautiful director, Judy Closson. He was active in Habitat for Humanity and was often seen on roofing and insulation days at various projects in Belmont, Mt. Holly and Gastonia. Jon was an executive with Watson Insurance in Gastonia and was a good neighbor in Belmont. We will miss his presence in our lives.
