Varsity soccer
South Point 9, A.L. Brown 0 — Tyler Martin scored twice and seven other players found the back of the net for South Point (11-1) in a non-conference match Tuesday. Will Harbin, Ryan Stephens, Kevin Patz, Nate Kelly, Ryan Anderson and Joey Mitchell also scored and Aaron Pegues had four assists. The Red Raiders play at North Gaston today.”

Yeah, that was the write-up — buried . Called in most likely, we suppose thats all they could publish, given the amount of advertising for today’s paper. At least we can give them (the Gazette) credit for writing that much.

We only have text messages and emails for this match to go on with our reporting of South Point soccer. Our sports staff had the night off.

From staff reports:

Tyler “Tater” Martin scored two goals to lead South Point to a 9-0 win over A.L. Brown HS of Kannapolis. Aaron Pegues had 4 assists, Will Harbin scored a goal along with goals by Ryan Stephens; both twins, Ryan AND Devon Anderson; youngsters, Joey Mitchell and Kevin Patz; Junior Nathan Kelly also scored.

Patz scored on a “sick volley shot”, Stephens “nailed one”, and Joey “ripped the net” .

Apparently, the visitors were overmatched, outweighed, and awestruck by the Red Raiders.

We hope the players took the opportunity to connect passes, play with speed, and use the effort as a training opportunity. Tonight’s match will be similar in its competitive value, but important for the senior leadership to instill discipline when it is necessary.

Several currently JV rostered players had minutes in this match: Joey Mitchell, Thomas Pennington, and Patz — although Patz plays V more occasionally, as GK, not in the field.

There was no JV match last night or tonight, maybe some of the young bucks could play up to get a touch or two with the seniors.
