Haskins Finds the Mark, South Point Falls to Foard

Well played, evenly matched sides by two state championship contenders on the next to last week of regular season. Fred T Foard wins the match over South Point 2-1.

Both teams had entered the match with two other matches under their belt during the week for this non-conference tilt. Foard’s blowouts didn’t match the Raider’s intense matches, but South Point still left it all on the field.

The first sixty minutes were fast and exciting, each team getting off great shots, and the keepers of each squad making super saves.

Foard broke through about the 63rd minute with an unmarked man heading the ball into the left post past the outstretched arm of Case Gadd.

South Point leveled the match two minutes later with a beautiful left-to-right, bending rocketshot by Kevin Haskins that found the space in the right upper 90 of the goal. This was his 34th regular season goal of the 2007 campaign — most of any division in the state.

As noted before, the match was solid by both schools. Each team is loaded with seniors and have great club experience to give them advantages in the upcoming state playoffs.

Foard found their second goal with 6 minutes left in the match. The shot was so fast and strong — it was one of the “in-and-outs” — that left the referees, spectators, and players scratching heads for a few seconds. After the center referee and the linesman spoke it was confirmed a goal for Foard.

Nothing for the Raiders to be ashamed of with this match. This was good preparation for the upcoming state playoffs.

The JV team tied 1-1 with the Foard JV’s.

Senior Night at South Point for the soccer team is Monday, October 22. Introductions will begin about 5:30 PM. Let’s have a good turnout for South Point’s last conference home match of the season. The match is against North Gaston, and begins at 6:00 PM.

State Playoffs begin Wednesday October 31st. South Point should have a first round home match against the 3rd place team from the Mountain Athletic Conference, either Erwin Clyde or TC Roberson at home. Roberson and Clyde are currently 2nd and 3rd respectively in their conference, with a match scheduled for Monday. Clyde won the first meeting 2-1 on September 26.

Entry filed under: Aaron Pegues, Belmont, Case Gadd, Front Porch, HS Soccer, HS Sports, Kevin Haskins, Matt Crane, School, Small Town, Soccer, South Point, South Point HS, Sports.

Front Porch, when the playoffs are set, will you post the brackets or a link to the brackets. I would like to know in case SP has an away game close to Greensboro that I might be able to catch. Thanks, Sasha

BTW, Forestview tied TC Roberson 2-2 on Friday. They appear to have a problem clinching games. It gives me hope that perhaps East Gaston or Hunter Huss can possibly keep Forestview from winning the conference championship if one of the games ends in a tie and South Point can win their last two games.
