Oh Yeah, SP Soccer Team Finishes Regular Season on High Note

Last Wednesday evening, in the pouring rain, the South Point soccer team beat Crest on their senior night, 3-0.

Kevin Haskins scored two goals, upping his total to 37 regular season goals and 13 assists. Ryan Anderson also scored a goal in the match.

It was a wet, wet night. The ball would hit a puddle and stop — killing most chances to connect well thought-out passes at a good pace. Several times when the ball stopped, the players would slosh past and fall into the mud.

Yucky night all around.

South Point ends the regular season in 2nd place in the Big South Conference, on-half game behind Forestview. The team’s current record is 18-2-1, and the squad still retains the #6 ranking in the state coaches poll.

All that is thrown out the window however, the playoffs begin this week. 3A school soccer is very competitive across the state this season. Rankings don’t mean a thing during the “second season”. It is win or go home.

Defending State Champion, Lake Norman High School, is in the western region (upper bracket), and is undefeated for the second year in a row. All thirty-two teams from the west are good. The top teams are considered to be Lake Norman, Fred T. Foard, Porter Ridge, NW Cabarrus, Hickory, Asheville, Charlotte Catholic, Olympic, Forestview,  TC Roberson, and South Point.  Other teams in the hunt that could bite hard are SW Guilford, West Iredell, Parkwood, and Asheboro.

South Point will be entertaining a dangerous Clyde Erwin team from the Mountain Athletic Conference on Halloween night, October 31. Kick off is 7:00 PM.  So, do your trick or treating early, and come to Lineberger Stadium.

It will all come down to who wants it most, who is willing to leave it all on the field each match, and how well the “oil” holds up under pressure.

GO RED RAIDERS !
