Belmont Abbey’s overcame injuries to starters Luis Arrieta (knee), Michael Scharville (back) and Nana Agyjeman (back) to defeat Limestone 2-1 in overtime Tuesday in the opening round of the conference tournament.
“It was a great team effort … a fantastic team effort,” Crusaders coach Stuart Brown said.
The Crusaders advance to Friday’s 7:30 p.m. semifinal against regular-season champion Lees-McRae (17-1-1) at Mount Olive. Lees-McRae is ranked No. 2 nationally and No. 1 in the region.
“It’ll be a challenge for us,” Brown said. “But one we look forward to.”

The streak continues, as in Belmont Abbey’s winning streak and shutout streak.
The Lady Crusaders’ 1-0 Wednesday conference tournament victory over Anderson increased their winning streak to 11 and shutout streak to 10.
The last time Belmont Abbey allowed a goal?
All the way back on Sept. 22 in a 4-1 victory over Limestone.
Interestingly, the Lady Crusaders next opponent is Limestone — at 5 p.m. Friday in the semifinals at Mount Olive.

Belmont Abbey is 8-23 overall and 6-13 in the league entering their regular-season finale Friday night at 7 p.m. at home against Pfeiffer.
The Crusaders have already clinched eighth place in next week’s tournament, which means they’ll host the ninth-place team Monday night at 6:30 p.m. in the opening round.
Entering the final weekend of league play, Converse (3-15), Queens (2-17) and Barton (1-17) were in contention for ninth place.

Belmont Abbey’s season continues Saturday in the NCAA Division II regionals at Wingate.
Patrick Boerjes and Logan Beytagh are the men’s top runners and Nadine Ntumba is the top women’s runner.
